Why it matters
Posidonia is the lung of the Mediterranean
Posidonia oceanica is not an alga: it is a flowering plant endemic to the Mediterranean. Its meadows produce most of the sea’s oxygen and are home to hundreds of species.
Uncontrolled anchoring, pollution and climate change have destroyed entire meadows. What takes millennia to grow can disappear in decades.
Produces up to 14 litres of oxygen per m² per day — more than any land forest.
25% of species in the Mediterranean depend on posidonia to reproduce and feed.
Traps sediments and protects coastlines from erosion and extreme waves.
Stores carbon for centuries — a CO₂ sink that is natural and irreplaceable.
