Why it matters
Posidonia is the lungs of the Mediterranean
Posidonia oceanica is not a seaweed: it is a flowering plant endemic to the Mediterranean. Its meadows produce most of the sea’s oxygen and are home to hundreds of species.
Uncontrolled anchoring, pollution and climate change have destroyed entire meadows. What takes millennia to grow can vanish in decades.
Produces up to 14 litres of oxygen per m² a day — more than any land forest.
25% of Mediterranean species rely on posidonia to breed and feed.
Traps sediment and shields coastlines from erosion and extreme swell.
Stores carbon for centuries — a natural, irreplaceable CO₂ sink.
