Why it matters
Posidonia is the lungs of the Mediterranean
Posidonia oceanica is not an alga: it’s a flowering plant found only in the Mediterranean. Its meadows produce most of the sea’s oxygen and are home to hundreds of species.
Uncontrolled anchoring, pollution and climate change have destroyed entire meadows. What takes millennia to grow can vanish in decades.
Produces up to 14 litres of oxygen per m² a day — more than any forest on land.
25% of all species in the Mediterranean rely on posidonia to breed and feed.
Traps sediment and protects the coast from erosion and extreme waves.
Stores carbon for centuries — a natural, irreplaceable CO₂ sink.
