Objectives
Status
Collect information on the status of the population in the Balearic Islands: current situation compared to the past, genetic analysis of the population.
Shrine
Promote the creation of sanctuaries for the species, specifically by strengthening the protection of shallow bays as habitats of special importance for many species, not only seahorses as natural incubators. Specifically: Talamanca Bay and Ses Estanys des Peix.
Dissemination
Raise awareness in society about the threat to marine species in general and seahorses in particular.
Observation
Encourage citizen participation to collect sightings with the participation of collaborating centers and volunteers and transmit the records to the “Sea Observers” program.
Breeding
Setting up a captive breeding program with experts from the University of Murcia to generate a stock of breeding individuals once the results of the population status study are available.

The University of Murcia has been working on this for years. The breeding project is led by the University of Murcia, provided that the need for this program is demonstrated in the study of the population’s status. Vellmarí will work to promote the creation of marine sanctuaries in the shallow bays of the Balearic Islands (Fornells, Talamanca, Portal Nous, Ses Estanys des Peix, etc.) as a priority habitat for the different species of syngnathids (H. guttulatus, H. hippocampus, S. abaster, S. typhle, etc.).
